Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanic mountains in Africa and is located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Mount Nyiragongo along with the neighboring Mount Nyamulagira is responsible for 40% of the volcanic activity in the entire Africa.

Trip description

Day 1: Leave Kigali for Bukavu – Kahuzi Biega national park

Your driver guide will be ready waiting for you to be ready for your safari. You will receive a briefing from your driver guide and you will set out on your drive south of Rwanda. You will pass via Butare and continue further to Nyungwe forest where you will stop for lunch.

You will continue to the Rusizi border to check in with the immigrations office. Drive to your hotel in Bukavu where you will settle and wait for dinner to be served.

Day 2: Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega national park

Wake up ready for this eventful day. Have a simple breakfast at the lodge and meet your driver guide to connect to the Kahuzi Biega park reception for the pre trek briefing. You will be briefed on the expectations of the lowland gorilla trek and also get a chance to hire the porters and needed hiking equipment.

You will enter the forest and search for about an hour before you meet the lowland gorilla family of the day. You will enjoy one hour with them and after head back to exit the forest and continue to your lodge for a late lunch. Spend the rest of the day at leisure reminiscing on the day’s events.

Day 3: Speed boat transfer to Goma

You will wake up for breakfast at your hotel and after pack your bags ready to take on the morning speed boat from the Bukavu port headed to the Goma port via lake Kivu. This is a 3 hour transfer. You will be in Goma in time for lunch at your hotel.

You will check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure. You may take on the Goma town service if you are interested and get back to your hotel in time for dinner and spend a night in Goma.

Day 4: Mount Nyiragongo hike up

Wake up energized and ready for your hike up one of the remaining active volcanic mountains the Mount Nyiragongo. This is a 5 hour hike up hill. You will receive a briefing before you set out and get a chance to hire porters and the Nyiragongo backpack. You will after follow the rangers up hill.

You will have 2 stopovers to catch a breath and a snack and continue uphill arriving at the summit by 5pm. Enjoy the views from the top and wait for dinner to be served. You will spend the night at the Nyiragongo summit shelters.

Day 5: Mount Nyiragongo descent and drive back to Kigali

Wake up to the beautiful sunrise from the top of the volcano. You will enjoy your breakfast and after start on your descent back to the trailhead of Mount Nyiragongo. You will be back to the trailhead at around 12 pm and your driver guide will be ready to transfer you to your next destination.

You will drive from Goma to Kigali and you will take on a Kigali city tour if you are interested and have time.
