The cottages are really simple. The cottages you sleep in are just a timber framework and some roll mats on the floor, but they keep you quite warm and have foam mattresses in them, so they are rather comfortable!
The shelters are located towards the peak, encircling the rim; you may wander around and observe the molten lava at any moment.
The path to the peak is teeming with animals, including chimps and many monkey species. The peak of Nyiragongo has less vegetation and more snow. Visitors may look down into a churning lava lake and see and hear hot roaring gases shooting up through a molten lava mosaic.
The trek to the top of Nyiragongo begins at Kibati, which is less than an hour’s drive from Goma and around the same distance from Mikeno Lodge. The hikes are conducted by park rangers, and you may always hire porters to assist you carry your gear. Depending on the fitness of the party, reaching the peak might take 4 to 6 hours.
The plant life vanishes at the finish of the ascent, leaving you exposed to the elements. The only item on the ground is a pile of rocks. It suddenly becomes quite chilly. There’s a shack nearby where you can change into cold-weather clothing.
There are also rudimentary toilet facilities. There is no trail for this last section; you must scramble over the rocks using whichever way fits you best, a la Lord of the Rings. It is feasible for physically fit persons to climb and descend in one day, but this is uncommon, thus most parties spend the night in the summit shelters. Nothing beats a scorching hot shower and turn down service. This is part of the experience of being in the outdoors!
The shelters are essentially two-person tents within small wooden constructions; this is hardly a luxury that can be enjoyed for an overnight stay! Hiking enthusiasts will understand what a hut is. It is critical to have rain gear with you because the weather might be chilly and there is a significant likelihood of rain. Temperatures are often below zero.
