 Ethnographic Museum in Huye : The Ethnographic museum of Rwanda is the main and largest museum in the country. It was granted to Rwanda as a gift from Belgium government in 1989 after 25 years of independence. Ethnographic Museum is located in Butare  in Huye district which is about 3 hours’ drive from Kigali the capital of Rwanda which is en-route to Nyungwe forest national park , approximately 133kmfrom Kigali city . The Museum is also known as Rwanda’s National Museum. This museum is one of the most fascinating structures around the town, the Museum also boast  some of the best ethnological and archeological collections in Rwanda as well as East Africa of more than 10, 000 artifacts  such fascinating and interesting materials includes, maps, art objects and artifacts documenting hunting, fishing, pottery, photos, textiles, woodcarving and metal working  among others .  The museum is comprised of six museums that makes up the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda and the ethnographic museum is one of them. The museum was formally named the National Museum of Rwanda. This museum is also known as the site of the murder of Queen Dowager Rosalie Gicanda who was murdered during the deadly blood terror in Rwanda “Rwanda Genocide” .The Ethnographic occupies an area of over 20 hectares with a nice looking compound, beautiful well-kept indigenous vegetation and a traditional craft training center. The Museum consists of seven exhibition halls that shower cases the beautiful attractive famous Intore dance performance, items that will help you explore and learn about the culture, traditions and norms of the Rwandan people.

The first hall is the main entrance contains a photos for exhibitions which is made up of shelves where you will find a number of traditional handcrafts on sale. The second hall is variety of displays contain the environmental, physical, ecological and geographical history of Rwanda. It also showcases the growth of the boundaries and wildlife species of Rwanda. The third room shows a display items that are used by the long ago people of Rwanda such as hunting and gathering, farming and cattle keeping among others. At this room, a traveler will get an opportunity to know how important their items including the social importance of animal rearing. Additionally, the forth room shows various items of handcrafts that are made out of weaving, woodwork and pottery, they include household items such as baskets, mats and many more. The fifth room is where you will be filled with a lot of exciting fascinating styles and methods of traditional architecture and showcases how they build a traditional hut known as Kagondo hut. The sixth room showcases different Rwandan traditional games and sports of Rwanda including the costumes and traditional equipment’s used in their traditional dances. And finally seventh room is where all information about the traditional culture, beliefs and customs, history, oral tradition and poetry as well as the supernatural life of the Rwandans are displayed
