Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga is located in south western Uganda and is Part of the Virunga chain of Volcanoes. It is on the border of Uganda and the DRC. Mount Gahinga is found in Mgahinga National Park which is the smallest national park in Uganda.

Mountain gorilla trekking

Mgahinga is home to one of the 13 gorillas families in Uganda. The family is called Nyakagyezi. The family has 9 members and its dominant silver back is called Mark. Just like in Bwindi you can track these gorillas at just $600.

Hiking

Mgahinga is relatively and easy hike compared to the other Virunga volcanoes. It’s just 3474m high. It is a dead volcano and has a crater on top. This crater is filled with swamps and swamp vegetation. While on this hike you will have chance to interact with wildlife such as baboons, golden monkeys and many more.

Golden monkey trekking

Golden monkeys is one of the rare animals to find behind the gorillas on this mountain. This is the only park where you can find golden monkey in Uganda. Other than this place golden monkey can be found in Volcanoes in Rwanda and Virunga in DRC. Golden monkey tracking will just cost you $100 and the permits can be obtained at the park headquarters, you do not have to have booked before.

Birding

Birding is another special thing you can do here. There are over 180 bird species of which 12 are endemic to the Albertine rift and others only to this park. Among the birds spotted include white necked raven, black kite, paradise fly catcher, pin tailed whydah, speckled mouse bird, double collared sunbird, olive woodpecker, olive pigeon, blue headed coucal, alpine chat, dusky turtle dove, regal sunbird, stray seedeater, olive thrush, Rwenzori batis, and bronze sunbird among others.

Mgahinga is among the less visited parks in Uganda and this has kept it so natural and less crowded which makes it unique during your visit. It has all aspects from culture, wildlife, historical and man-made features.
