What does Mount Nyiragongo mean? Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is 11,380 feet high which is an elevation of 3,470 meters high. Mount Nyiragongo is one of the Virunga mountains which are found along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Albertine region. They lie in the western branch of the East African Rift Valley. The other Virunga mountains are the Mount Karisimbi, Mount Visoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Mikeno and Mount sabinyo. Mount Nyiragongo is located about 20 kilometers north of Goma town and Lake Kivu that is shared with Rwanda. Mount Nyiragongo’s lava lake is the world’s largest that is about 1.2 kilometres wide. The depth of the lake varies but ranges about 200m deep and is known to be the most voluminous lava lake of all time as well. Another great lava lake known as Mount Nyamuragira lava lake borders Nyiragongo and is also an active volcano. These 2 have been reported responsible for 40 % of the volcanic eruptions in Africa as a continent.
