Nyiragongo Hiking Permit

Nyiragongo Hiking Permit: Nyiragongo is one of the most exciting hikes in Africa. This is so probably because it is one of the most active volcanoes in Africa and the world at large.

One of the things the make this volcano a must hike is the fact that it is home to the largest lava lake in the world. This volcano has erupted over 34 times in the recent times with its most recent being in 2002.

There is volcanic activity still going on but it is limited to the lava lake.

The hike to this volcano will require about three or four days in total. You arrive at the airport in Kigali and depending on the time you may transfer to Goma via Gisenyi.

You can start the hike the next morning. The hike starts at 10 am and take about 6 hours to reach the summit depending on the energy level. It could even be less. You will spend another night at the top of the volcano where you will experience the magnificent views of the lava lake.

Surprisingly the top is so cold and some areas are snow-capped despite the existence of the lava lake. One would imagine that it would create enough head to melt the snow.

A permit to hike the Nyiragongo volcano is USD 300 and can be obtained at the park headquarters of Virunga national park. You do not have to book the permit prior but can pay cash on the day of the hike.

The permit only caters for the services of the hike and so you will hire you porters to help you with your luggage and also find you own meals. Some lodges provide meals for you.
