Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park in the DRC is the oldest park in Africa. It has the best diversity also. It boosts of half of the total concentration of natural attractions in the sub Saharan region of Africa. It has been under the threat of the political climate in the past that’s why its development has been poor but every time it has taken of, the speed has been manifested in the number of people that visit it.
Gazette as early as 1925, the park was called Albert national Park at first and was solely formed to protect the endangered mountain gorillas found only here Rwanda and Uganda.
After independence in 1960, the park detained because of the harsh political climate until the 1970’s when the government took over the park and re named it Virunga National Park.
The park is about 7800 sq km and stretches from Virunga Mountains in the South to the Rwenzori in the north.
The park is known for the high concentration of Birds, Mammals and reptiles more than any other protected area in Africa. There are other primates like Chimpanzees, baboons and monkeys. The gorillas are something you can forget to mention.
Mountain gorillas have been the face of tourism in this park (major attraction) for a long time since there are few place you will meet these endangered species and it being less crowded and cheaper than in Uganda and Rwanda. This park is also home tow the only two active volcanoes among the Virunga volcanoes. Nyiragongo being the home to the largest lava Lake in the world.
The park is still so fresh since it has been free in the past from exploration and it good for those on research and adventure tourism.
Since 2012 the area has been save from any form of instabilities and so good for travel. There has been propaganda from some people that it is not safe but people are adventuring and coming back alive; come to think of it. Reward yourself a lifetime experience by trying visiting this park.
