5 Days Mount Nyiragongo hike and Tchegera Island visit : Take on a 5 day safari to the Virunga national park for the Mount Nyiragongo hike and conclude the trip with 2 nights on the Tchegera Island retreat. You will enjoy the Tchegera island, the black sand island for two nights.
Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanic mountains in Africa and is located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Mount Nyiragongo along with the neighboring Mount Nyamulagira are responsible for 40% of the volcanic activity in the entire Africa.

Trip description
Day 1: Leave Kigali for Goma/ Gisenyi
Your driver guide will be waiting for you when you are ready to transfer to start your safari. Depending on your location, you will connect to the Grande Barrier border to the tourism office to get your permits for the next activities and later head to your hotel in Goma in time for lunch. Settle in and spend the rest of the day at leisure or later in the evening you may take on the Goma town service if you are interested and get back to your hotel in time for dinner and spend a night in Goma.

Day 2: Mount Nyiragongo hike up
Wake up energized and ready for your hike up one of the remaining active volcanic mountains the Mount Nyiragongo. This is a 5 hour hike up hill. You will receive a briefing before you set out and get a chance to hire porters and the Nyiragongo backpack. You will after follow the rangers up hill.
You will have 2 stopovers to catch a breath and a snack and continue uphill arriving at the summit by 5pm. Enjoy the views from the top and wait for dinner to be served. You will spend the night at the Nyiragongo summit shelters.
Day 3: Mount Nyiragongo descent and boat transfer to Tchegera Island
Wake up to the beautiful sunrise from the top of the volcano. You will enjoy your breakfast and after start on your descent back to the trailhead of Mount Nyiragongo. You will be back to the trailhead at around 12 pm and your driver guide will be ready to transfer you to your next destination.
You will take on a boat transfer from Goma to Tchegera. This is a 15 minutes transfer and you will arrive in the afternoon hours ready for lunch to relax and enjoy the resort as the sun goes down. The night will be spent at Tchegera Island Retreat.
Day 4: Full day on Tchegera Island
You will enjoy a leisurely day at the island. You will enjoy the luxurious breakfast served at Tchegera Island and after opt to take on some island activities like snorkeling, kayaking, or just a simple boat trip. You will have a barbeque lunch at the resort and spend the evening enjoying the breeze. You may be lucky to enjoy the visit from the blue monkey that occasionally shows up at the resort. Dinner will be served and you will enjoy your night in Tchegera Island Retreat.
Day 5: Leave the island and drive back to Kigali
This will be the last day of this safari. You will wake up at leisure and later pack your bags to take a speed boat scheduled to leave the island. You will advise on where you would like to be dropped off, whether Goma or Kigali. You may take on the complimentary Kigali city tour if you are interested and still have time.
