What caused Mount nyiragongo to erupt?

Mount Nyiragongo erupted in 2002 and that was the most recognized and most recent eruption of this mountain as of today. This eruption didn’t come as a surprise as there were so many signs of a possible eruption starting from the multiple continuous earthquakes/tremors in the region. The neighboring Nyamuragira mountain erupted 2 weeks before the mighty Nyiragongo also gave way on the 17th of January 2002. The natives of the region reported sound coming from the ground with dark fumes ejected into the air from Nyiragongo which raised their concern about their safety.

The prolonged earthquakes and tremors were evidence enough that there was excessive pressure forces in the region which weakened the fault lines of the mountain eventually letting the lava flow. A river of Lava flowed down up to Goma town reaching where people lived but were being evacuated to minimize number of deaths though so much property was destroyed. Nyiragongo eruptions are very dangerous as the lava is more liquid and flows faster hence covering longer distances.

Volcano eruption is the rupturing of the earth’s crust letting out the red lava from below the earth’s surface to flow out of a magma chamber along with the volcanic gases and ash. There are majorly 3 reasons why a volcano could erupt. The first being the ejection of new magma to an already full magma chamber (Tectonic plate movement) which cause a thin lava flow usually. Secondly the buoyancy of the magma and thirdly the pressure from the exsolved gasses in the magma which could all have been the case with Mount Nyiragongo eruption of 2002. Usually when the pressure within the magma chambers is stronger the crust, the weak points of the earth faults letting out the old magma creating space for the new magma. The lava may flow or shoot out into the air when a volcanic mountain erupts.

There are 3 types of volcanoes: A caldera volcano (Table shaped top), a shield volcano (basin shaped peak) and a stratovolcano like Mount Nyiragongo. Stratovolcanoes are the kind that have the classic cone shape associated with volcanoes. They usually have violent eruptions with thin lava which cools before spreading out so far however can reach u to temperatures of 400 degrees Celsius. It is also associated with mad slides.

Volcanic eruptions can cause multiple natural disasters like earthquakes, landslides and rock falls and these are all warning signs of a possible eruption. Also this lava is extremely hot so it burns and buries anything it finds on its way. The air that comes out of the volcanic mountain is usually contaminated and smelly like ammonia and can cause suffocation in infants leading to death. Lava can be pushed up to hundreds of feet above into the air when the volcanoes erupt.
